Government agencies are facing massive budget shortfalls in the next few years as they grapple with the COVID-related economic recession. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, states alone will face shortfalls of $555 billion cumulatively between FY 2020-2022. At the same time, many public sector agencies are experiencing spikes in demand as constituents apply for assistance and seek government services. Technology is an important avenue for efficiencies and cost optimization, but IT leaders throughout the country will need to be creative in how they fund their initiatives.
Today, more than two dozen federal agencies offer over 1,100 grant programs that are open to state, local and educational organizations. In addition, the federal government enacted the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which provides $2.2 trillion to help the U.S. recover from COVID-19.
