Total Economic Impact Study Reveals Tanium XEM Platform Delivered 97% Reduction in Software Vulnerability and More Than 200% ROI for Interviewed Organizations

Independent study also shows a 60% increase in endpoint management efficiency through automation as well as 70% improvement in endpoint management and security tool consolidation, resulting in millions of dollars in savings

KIRKLAND, Wash. – May 1, 2024 – Tanium, the industry’s leading provider of  Converged Endpoint Management (XEM), today announced findings from a recent Forrester Consulting study commissioned by Tanium examining the potential return on investment (ROI) of Tanium’s XEM platform. Using independent and objective research from interviews with Tanium customers ranging from 2,200 to 140,000 endpoints, the study determined that investing in Tanium XEM would allow a composite organization representative of interviewed customers, which has 40,000 employees and 48,000 endpoints, to experience benefits of $18.07 million over three years versus costs of $5.5 million. This net present value (NPV) of $12.57 million and ROI of 228% over three years followed a payback timeframe of less than six months.

Interviewees said that prior to using Tanium XEM, their organizations used multiple complex solutions and manual processes throughout their endpoint management workflows, resulting in limitations such as restricted visibility, security breaches, and time-consuming data reconciliations. After deploying Tanium XEM, the interviewees were able to automate and centralize their endpoint management process to achieve real-time visibility and control. Positive ROI is not limited to this study’s findings and is routinely delivered to Tanium customers. For example, leading healthcare provider and customer,  VITAS Healthcare, was able to remotely update 98% of all employee computers in two months and reduce software patching cycles from more than 30 days to less than two weeks.

The Forrester study also examined the cost savings, benefits, and business impact driven by Tanium, quantified in terms of software license reclamation, endpoint management efficiency, software vulnerability reduction, and tool consolidation. One participant, the lead cybersecurity engineer at an insurance company, reduced staffing across multiple functions in the organization including security and DevOps teams by 20% to 30% across platforms. Another participant, a vice president and CISO of information technology in the healthcare industry, estimated that Tanium XEM did approximately 4% to 6% of the 10% reduction in their cyber insurance premium. Other key findings, referencing the composite organization, show that investing in Tanium:

  • Successfully reclaimed unused, rarely used, or unauthorized software titles with Tanium XEM on 90% of endpoints, resulting in more than $4.8 million in savings over three years.
  • Increased endpoint management efficiency by 60% using Tanium XEM for automating activities such as software development, patching, and security assessments, totaling more than $1 million in savings over three years.
  • Reduced software vulnerabilities by 97% through automating patch deployment, assessing vulnerabilities, and leveraging real-time data, resulting in $7.9 million worth of risk mitigation cost avoidance over three years.
  • Improved endpoint management and security tool consolidation by 70% relying on comprehensive coverage to consolidate endpoint management and security tools, resulting in over $4.1 million worth of savings over three years.

IT security teams are historically challenged to keep endpoints patched and updated in a timely manner on dangerously unmanaged devices. Before Tanium, many organizations’ endpoints often went unpatched for more than 150 days, exposing them to potential threats and breaches. Customers are now able to see and remediate vulnerabilities at 99+% efficacy, reducing their risk exposure and improving their compliance posture
