Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter Joins Tanium Board of Directors

Carter brings deep technical acumen and extensive operational experience to support Tanium’s growth at scale

KIRKLAND, WA., April 21, 2021Tanium, the provider of endpoint management and security built for the world’s most demanding IT environments, today announced that Ash Carter has joined the company’s Board of Directors as an independent director. Carter is the Director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School, and an Innovation Fellow at MIT. He served as the 25th United States Secretary of Defense from 2015 to 2017.

“I’ve seen first-hand the cybersecurity threats organizations and governments face,” Carter said. “I believe in the power of platforms, like Tanium, to help organizations see and gain control of their IT environments, while also breaking down information silos — critical for enabling collaboration and collective action to stay ahead of future threats. I look forward to partnering with Orion and the leadership team on Tanium’s mission.”

“From his experience leading the largest organization in the world with millions of employees, to managing across many stakeholder groups in times of global change, Ash brings a honed understanding of building operational excellence at scale and developing the capacity to work across organizations effectively,” said Orion Hindawi, co-founder and CEO, Tanium. “As the single source of truth for endpoint data, Tanium can power incredible innovation across our ecosystem and a range of applications. We are so excited to have Ash join us on this journey, and help us make that possible at scale.”

This appointment supports Tanium’s commitment to bring in experienced operators to its Board of Directors to help the company scale as it works toward its next chapter of growth. The company also recently appointed Mark Fields, former CEO of Ford Motor Company, David Rowland, executive chairman of Accenture, and Matt Thompson, former Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations at Adobe, to its Board of Directors.

Carter served as the U.S. Secretary of Defense from 2015 to 2017, and previously worked directly and indirectly under 11 Secretaries of Defense in both Democratic and Republican administrations. He also has served in the private sector, holding teaching and leadership roles at Harvard University, Stanford University and MIT. Most recently, he was a distinguished visiting fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, and a Senior Executive at the Markle Foundation. For over 35 years inside government as well as in the private sector, Carter leveraged his experience in national security, technology and innovation to defend the United States and make a better world. He was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Department’s highest civilian honor, on five separate occasions.

In addition to his Tanium appointment, Carter serves on the board of Delta Air Lines, GE and The MIT Corporation. He also advises the MITRE Corporation and Lincoln Laboratories on technology matters.
